Understand the challenges of applying for citizenship

Reports show that there are roughly 800,000 immigrants in Florida who are eligible for citizenship, with 500,000 of them living in South Florida.

The pathway to citizenship can be challenging as there are many requirements you must meet in order to have your application approved. Many immigrants come to Florida and eventually apply for citizenship. Before you start the process, we think it is important for you to understand the basics of applying for citizenship so you know what to expect.

What are the main requirements for citizenship in the United States? Listed below are several issues to be aware of when applying for citizenship:

  • You must meet a five year residency requirement, with half of those five years spent living in the U.S.
  • You must be able to speak English
  • You must pass a 100 question civics and American History test
  • You must complete an application with at least 50 critical questions
  • You must pay the $680 application fee

You are able to re-apply for citizenship if your application is denied. However, if your application is rejected, you may not have any other options. Common reasons for a rejected application include having a criminal record, being affiliated with a terrorist group or filing a fraudulent application.

Applying for citizenship can be challenging, especially if you do not understand the process or what requirements to meet. If you or a family member is considering applying for citizenship, you should consult an attorney to help you prepare for certain tests and make sure the process goes as smoothly as possible.
