Immigration status questioned? Know your rights

Many immigrants in Florida may feel threatened or nervous when they are questioned by the police or immigration agents. You are not alone if you do not know what to do if you are approached by the police or immigration agents.

In this post, we will discuss your rights and what steps you should take if you are stopped, questioned or taken into custody by the police, immigration agents or the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

It is important to recognize that you have rights. You do not have to talk to the police or immigration agents. You have the right to remain silent. You do not need to discuss your immigration status with agents, police or other officials. Take advantage of this right to protect yourself.

You have other rights, too, which include:

  • You do not have to consent to police or agents searching you, your home or your vehicle or let them into your home without a warrant
  • You may leave if you are not under arrest or being taken into custody
  • You do not have to sign anything if you are taken into custody by ICE

One of the most important things to do is to contact an attorney as soon as possible. Understanding these rights can help you in the long run if you are ever questioned or arrested.

You have the right to work with a lawyer to protect your rights and your future. Facing deportation or an arrest can be a scary experience. An attorney can protect your rights and walk you through the process.
