Google goes to congress to make case for immigration reform

Regular readers of this blog are likely aware why immigration reform is so important to businesses in the country. Many businesses that are dependent upon high-skilled workers claim to need visas to be available to fill positions necessary for the success of the business. Accordingly, businesses have been some of the most vocal supporters of immigration reform. Google is one of those businesses.

The executive chairman recently went before Congress to make the case for an increase in the number of visas for high-skilled workers that are available to workers from other countries. Highly-skilled workers can come into the United States via H-1B visas. He believes that the H-1B visa program should be expanded. He also believes that should be accomplished separately from the rest of the immigration matters that need to be addressed.

Currently the annual cap on H-1B visas is 65,000. One senator has sponsored a bill that would increase that number to somewhere between 115,000 and 195,000.

Those who disagree with this approach believe that the program is used by businesses to bring foreign labor into the county and pay them less to do the same work as citizens of the U.S. who are already here can do.

Whether businesses like Google will get their way remains to be seen. What is clear is that many people, including immigrants living in the state of Florida, would like action to be taken on immigration matters. As things do change immigration lawyers will be more important than ever for both individuals and businesses seeking to come and bring people into the U.S.
