For insurance coverage under ACA proof of legal residency needed

There are many things that immigrants living in the state of Florida need to be concerned about. Now there is one more thing to add to that list. Health officials with the federal government are requiring that close to 94,000 individuals in the state provide information that supports the contention that they are in the nation legally. The reason behind the request is that the individuals have applied for insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

To be eligible to participate in the tax-supported healthcare marketplace under the ACA, a person must be in the country legally.

The request is being made of people in other parts of the nation as well. In total, federal officials are currently looking for documentation from approximately 310,000 people located in states where the federal government runs the insurance marketplaces. That is the case in a total of 36 states. To accomplish this, officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have reached out to the individuals via:

  • Telephone.
  • E-mail .
  • Letters in the mail.

Individuals who have the documentation to prove they are legal residents have until Sept. 5 to get the information to the HHS. Those who do not meet that deadline will find that when their policy expires at the end of the month, they no longer have coverage.

Immigrants who have questions regarding this request may benefit from consulting an immigration lawyer. Those who do not have the necessary documentation may be able to work with an immigration attorney to figure out how residency may be obtained.
