Possible changes to H-1B program could make it even more enticing

Readers may be aware that the H-1B visa cap was recently reached in less than a week. These visas are appealing not only to employers in the United States in need of workers with certain skills, but also to the workers themselves.  If rules being considered by the U.S. are adopted, workers will have even more reason to be interested in the program.

Perhaps the most interesting change would impact spouses of those granted H-1B visas. If accepted, spouses of individuals who received visas in the tech or science category could receive visas of their own that would make it possible to for them to work in the U.S. as well. The new rules, from the Department of Homeland Security, are expected to be published soon.

If adopted, these rules will likely provide a boost to the already very popular H-1B visa program. According to the White House, they will:

  • Enhance American innovative competiveness.
  • Create jobs.
  • Provide a substantial contribution to the U.S. economy.

The White House indicates that the reason behind this, and the other rules expected to be proposed, is to make the immigration more streamline and transparent, as well as provide better transparency.

When changes such as these are made to the immigration system it is unlikely that the average individual will understand them. Because of this it is important that individuals or businesses seeking to secure visas consult with an immigration lawyer. Attorneys who handle these types of cases should be aware of the changes like these that occur.
